Nandrolone decanoate is the sodium salt of the anabolic steroid nandrolone that affects erythropoiesis. The nuclear androgen receptors in responsive tissue, such as the prostate, seminal vesicles, scrotum, penis, larynx, hair follicles, muscle, and bone, bind to and are activated by nandrolone when it enters the cell. The resultant hormone receptor complex that gets activated translocates into the nucleus and binds to androgen response elements (ARE) in the promoter region of the targeted genes, where the complex increases gene expression required for retaining male characteristics. The release of luteinizing hormone reduced by nandrolone decanoate imitates the negative feedback testosterone mechanism (LH). Additionally, this medication increases the creation of an erythropoietic stimulating factor, which increases erythropoietin production.
